Irving Penn - Exhibition at the Grand Palais
A 100 years ago, Irving Penn was born and became one of the most influential photographer of the 20th century. For this occasion, the Grand Palais in Paris worked with the Metropolitan Museum of New York to organise a huge retrospective with Irving Penn's artwork.
He portrayed some of the most famous people of several generations. He has always been faithful to Studio photography and had mastered the art of lighting, shadows and directing people. His photos are characterized by a neutral background that highlights the simplicity of the people and the clothing in each one, while creating an elegant and fashionable picture. Even though he really started out as a fashion photographer (with many of his photographs on the cover of Vogue), his pictures always went further than showing the clothing items and reveled personalities and expressions without any social signs until his series of tribes in Benin and Papua New Guinea.
